Overview
This is a fully remote, contract role, with the ideal candidate located in Latin America. Proficient English skills (written and verbal) are required. All application materials must be presented in English.
As a Senior Java Developer, you'll join a software engineering team supporting several products, with a focus on ScholarOne Manuscripts — the world's premier platform for scholarly peer review. Today, one-third of all scientific research moves through the ScholarOne system.
ScholarOne is built for scale. Its powerful workflow engine supports over 8,000 unique sites and workflows, serves more than 3,000 customer employees worldwide, and processes upwards of 3.5 million manuscript submissions every year.

Essential Functions
- Serve as a Full Stack engineer in an Agile environment with Java/Spring on the backend. This includes coding, testing, and troubleshooting programs utilizing the appropriate hardware, database, and programming technology
- Review requirements, participate in design and ensure thorough unit testing
- Maintain SaaS-grade standards with a track record of building and delivering high-quality software in scalable commercial applications.
- Ability to grasp and analyze complex, multi-dimensional technical problems.
- Leverage Artificial Intelligence tools and technologies for software development.
- 6+ years of experience as a software engineer developing commercial software
- 2+ years of experience working within a SaaS delivery model.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field or equivalent practical experience.
- Java 17+ proficiency; strong OOP and design patterns
- Spring Boot / Spring Framework (MVC, Security, Data)
- RESTful API design and microservices experience
- Proven experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Knowledge of working in AWS cloud environments and technologies.
- Unit and integration testing (JUnit 5, Mockito)
- Git, CI/CD, containerization basics (Docker)
- Experience with SQL technologies; familiarity with search technologies such as Elasticsearch is a plus.
- Good understanding of security best practices and secure coding standards.
- Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Anthropic Claude Code preferred
- Experience with responsive design and accessibility best practices preferred
- Some Linux experience preferred
