Staff Accountant

Role Summary

The Staff Accountant supports the daily accounting operations of the company by recording financial transactions, assisting with month-end close activities, supporting accounts payable and payroll, and performing reconciliations.

This role helps ensure that financial data is accurate, current, and properly documented.

The Staff Accountant works closely with the Controller and the Senior Accountant to support consistent, timely accounting processes.

Core Responsibilities

  • Transaction Processing & General Support
    • Record day-to-day financial transactions in the company’s accounting system.
    • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including basic journal entries and supporting schedules.
    • Support the accounts payable function as needed (e.g., invoice entry, vendor inquiries).
  • Payroll & Reconciliations
    • Assist with bi-monthly payroll processing and related reconciliations.
    • Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations under the direction of the Senior Accountant or Controller.
    • Reconcile credit card transactions and statements and assist with check and unapplied cash reconciliations.
  • Cash Management & Mail Processing
    • Scan incoming mail and checks and deposit all checks received in accordance with company procedures.
    • Support cash application and work cross-functionally with Accounts Receivable.
  • Cross-Training & Collaboration
    • Cross train with the Accounts Receivable team (cash posting and A/R analysis) to provide coverage and support.
    • Perform other accounting duties and special projects as needed by management.


Qualifications

Experience

  • 3–5 years of recent experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or similar roles.
  • Experience with accounting systems and basic general ledger functions.

Required Competencies

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy with financial data.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines while managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and other Microsoft applications.

Education

  • Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Preferred

  • Experience in healthcare, payer, revenue cycle, or related environments.
  • Experience with QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar accounting software.
